Humpback whales

The fascinating ballet of the whales

Rurutu is the ultimate whale island, as whales spend 3 to 4 months in its waters, breeding just a few hundred meters from shore and weaning their calves. Humpback whales can measure up to 16 meters in length, with immense flippers. The love songs of these majestic cetaceans can sometimes be heard.

An incredible experience
Whale watching is possible from platforms in Moerai Bay, between July 15 and October 15. For the more adventurous, it's possible to dive in their company with a guide-instructor, whose role is to respect the animal, taking care not to stress or disturb it.

During their sleepy phases, when they remain motionless, the guide allows you to slip discreetly into the water, equipped only with fins, mask and snorkel. In this way, a fascinating and unforgettable spectacle can be observed in complete tranquillity.

During the whales' active phases, observations are made from a boat, offering the opportunity to photograph the jumps and other aerial demonstrations of these acrobats. For those who don't have the time to travel to Rurutu, a private trip can be organized to Tahiti and Moorea between August and November, in the company of a diving instructor, in search of humpback whales.
