The Tifaifai is a traditional Polynesian blanket made from a sheet onto which pieces of fabric of various colors and shapes have been sewn and assembled. They often feature geometric or floral motifs. Historically, it's a precious object, carefully crafted to reflect the patience and creativity of Polynesian women.
A strong symbol
Handcrafted with care and often offered on special occasions such as weddings, christenings or other important family events. Handed down from generation to generation, it has great symbolic value, representing family heritage and intergenerational ties. A mark of affection and love, respect and consideration, they are given to loved ones of high social status as wedding or farewell gifts. These works are also an artistic expression of ancestral know-how, reflecting both the patience and creativity of Polynesian women.
All about tifaifai
Quite expensive, they can be found at the Papeete market, or at craft shows such as the Salon du Tifaifai. This event takes place every spring. It revolves around a specific theme, and brings together some twenty Mamas to showcase the products of their passion and share their know-how. A competition rewards those whose dexterity and creativity sublimate the chosen theme. There are as many applique motifs as there are Tifaifai enthusiasts. Often, motifs are unique to a particular person, and are jealously guarded. The Mamas at the market or at exhibitions will be able to tell you more about these Polynesian masterpieces.
