The legend of Huahine island

Hiro's vain warnings
One day, the god Hiro tried to sail to the island of To'erau roa, formerly known as Huahine. The wind, the to'erau, picks up and rushes into the sail. Hiro's pirogue catches the wind and glides over the waves.

Hiro asks his brothers to steer the pirogue carefully. But they pay no heed to his warnings. Only the youngest, Tupurairai, listens. His brothers tell him:
« Keep quiet, or we'll throw you into the sea! »
Tupurairai remains silent, for fear of being thrown into the sea and eaten by sharks. Hiro, attentive, scans the horizon. In the middle of the dark night, he asks his brothers to keep a close eye on the pirogue, for when the wind shifts, it may pass the island of To'erau Roa. Hiro tells them:
– « I'm going to get some rest. When the land is near, wake me up. Beware: when the fog lifts, wake me or our pirogue will cross the land ».

But the brothers of the god Hiro pay no heed to these warnings, except for the last of the Tupurairai brothers, who alone tells his brothers to steer the pirogue with great care. His brothers reply:
- « Keep still or we'll throw you into the sea ! »

The pirogue cut the island in two.
Suddenly, the wind shifted and inflated the pirogue's sail. However, Hiro's brothers don't wake their eldest as the pirogue rolls along, pleasantly pushed by the wind.
The pirogue crosses the island, dividing To'erau Roa into two parts: the larger To'erau, now known as Huahine Nui, and the smaller Huahine Iti.
When Hiro wakes up, he sees that the island has been cut in two, while the pirogue continues its crossing. Hiro loses his pirogue's paddle. He then tries to stop the pirogue by throwing his hook onto the island.
Today, Hiro's oar and hook can still be seen from Huahine's Maroe Bay.
