Hiking

Outdoor experience

The Papenoo Valley, located on Tahiti's northeast coast, is one of the island's most beautiful natural gems, ideal for hikers in search of a change of scenery. This majestic valley, through which the Papenoo River flows, offers a varied terrain of steep mountains, spectacular waterfalls and crystal-clear basins.

Exploring the waterfalls
Along the way in the Maroto valley, several impressive waterfalls line the trail, some of them hidden in natural pools. These waterfalls are ideal for stopping and cooling off before continuing your hike.

Hike to Lake Vaihiria
One of the most popular hikes in the Maroto Valley leads to Lake Vaihiria, Tahiti's largest freshwater lake, nestled at an altitude of 470 meters. The trail, though more challenging, offers complete immersion in the rainforest, with numerous views of the surrounding mountains. The lake is surrounded by a peaceful, mystical atmosphere, perfect for a contemplative break.

Practical advice

  • Access: An all-terrain vehicle is recommended for access to the Maroto Valley, and guided excursions are available.
  • Equipment: Hiking boots, tropical clothing, plenty of water and snacks are essential.
  • Safety: Due to the wild nature of this region, it is advisable to set off with a local guide to navigate the little-marked trails and better understand the biodiversity and local culture.
