Mainly known for whale watching from August to October, the island of Rurutu does offer other exciting activities throughout the year! Available on-site at the guest house: 4X4 tour of the taro fields – the island’s main economic resource -, lychee trees and other crops, horseback riding along the extensive beaches or in the mountains, weaving workshops – the specialty of the Austral Islands – and, of course, for the more adventurous ones, explore the island’s impressive caves, such as ‘Hina’s Cave’, named after a mythical fairy-fingered ogress, said to be the inspiration basketry tradition on Rurutu. Bikes and cars are also available for rental, to go around the island or to the village.
