WHAT IS THE UNIT OF CURRENCY IN TAHITI AND HER ISLANDS?
The unit of currency in French Polynesia is the Pacific franc (XPF), also known as the CFP franc. This exchange rate is fixed against the euro: 1 euro is equivalent to around 119.33 XPF. You'll find exchange offices at Tahiti-Faa'a international airport and in Papeete's main banks.

WHICH BANKS ARE PRESENT IN POLYNESIA?
Several local and international banks are present in Tahiti and the main islands, including :

  • Bank of Polynesia (Societe Generale group)
  • Bank of Tahiti
  • Socredo Bank

These establishments have ATMs for cash withdrawals and also offer foreign exchange services in the main towns. In the more remote islands, banking services are more limited, so it's best to bring cash with you.

WHICH PAYMENT METHODS ARE BEST
In tourist areas and on the main islands, credit cards (Visa, Mastercard) are widely accepted in hotels, restaurants and stores. However, in the more isolated islands and for purchases in markets or small shops, we recommend that you bring cash in Pacific Francs (XPF).

HOW MUCH POCKET MONEY TO BUDGET FOR
The cost of living in French Polynesia is relatively high due to the importation of many products. For a comfortable stay, here's an average estimate of the daily budget:

  • Meals: Between 2,000 and 4,000 XPF for a simple meal in a local restaurant.
  • Transport: The cost of cabs and transport is high, so expect to pay between 1,500 and 3,000 XPF per journey.
  • Tourist activities: Excursions can vary from 6,000 to 15,000 XPF.
  • Accommodation: This depends very much on the type and standard of accommodation.
