Fancy a spot of big game fishing?

4200km² vs. 4 million km²! That’s the ratio between dry land and French Polynesia’s sea area. Just picture it…118 islands (only 67 of which are inhabited) dotted here and there on a surface the size of Europe. So much water for so little land! But this part of the Pacific Ocean isn’t just home to paradise “motus”! It is also home to no fewer than 800 different species of marine life in the high seas, reefs and lagoon! That’s enough for an entire population to live off!

Fishing is integral to Polynesia’s island dwellers and was long their only source of protein. In ancient Polynesian culture, everyone living on the coast and nearby mountains had a wooden pirogue so they could fish and feed the family. Fishing techniques have since modernised and diversified but the passion is still there and Polynesians are now able to go further and deeper. They still go out on the sea for pleasure if they live on the more developed islands whilst those who live on more distant islands still use fishing to feed themselves.

A host of competitions are held throughout the year and the local Dépêche du Dimanche newspaper always publishes record catches (the most recent: a 400kg swordfish!) How about you? Fancy a spot of fishing? Our 2015 Exclusive Service range has 3 real big game fishing boat trips (21-26 feet). Spend a half-day or full-day in Tahiti, Moorea or Bora Bora trolling, popper fishing or jigging. You will have the best fishing methods to help you catch some big fish such as swordfish, tuna, marlin, bonito, wahoo or mahi mahi to name but a few of Polynesia’s most popular species. Lagoon and high sea fishing trips are also available on request from other islands.

Note: Big game fishing requires everyone on board to be in good health. Depending on the weather, navigation conditions may change over time. Guests with seasickness are welcome to take appropriate pills before departure. Hats, sun cream or lycra, non-slip shoes and cameras are essential! At the end of the big game fishing trip, the spoils are shared between the captain and client if they wish to have a piece.
