Project Description

The bay of Aneou

The bay of Aneou

Ua Pou, the two extraordinary pillars of Oatea and Atanua’s house, can be proud of its famous basaltic peaks which can be seen on our 500 XPF notes.

The airport of Ua Pou is located in the valley of Aneou. The landing of the Twin Otter is special but it is worth living, strong sensations guaranteed. However, it is also possible to reach Ua Pou by boat, thanks to the Aranui.

The main valley of Hakahau is the administration center where the main businesses of the island are. The boats dock at the quay of Hakahau. The inhabitants await the goods there which are distributed by the Aranui once every two weeks.

Hakahau also has a beautiful church. It is a meeting place for the population of this valley who sing melodically in the Marquesian language. The inhabitants of Ua Pou are extremely welcoming and do not hesitate to approach the visitors and to help them.

Hiking and strolls on horse back make it possible to discover the incredible beauty of this exceptional island.
The bay of Simone, located at about fifteen minutes by car from Hakahau, is enchanting. Its long beach allows superb strolls up to the bottom of the cliff.

The valley of Hoho’i is not to be missed. This valley leads down to a splendid bay where it is still possible to find “flowered” stones. They are a real treasure which can be found only at 2 places in the world, one of which is Hoho’i. Some craftsmen of this valley work this naturally “flowered” stone to make splendid priceless jewellery (rings, necklaces, bracelets).

Hoho’i also looks after the only Mea’e (ancient open air sacred temple) in Ua Pou, which was restored and hosted in 2007 a very famous Festival of Arts of the Marquesas Islands – an event not to be missed.
